Old Pugsley update; Alfine 8 speed IGH refitted..

So i got around to fitting the Shimano 8 speed Alfine internal gear hub (IGH) to the old Pugsley last week;
I had most of the parts needed except a Surly 32tooth Chain ring which i thought i did have but must have put on something else, along with a chain-there was a half link chain i had previously bought but did not like the size/weight/ odd fitment/repair for such a chain so decided to order a new budget KMC rustproof chain..

Back to the bike and i stripped the rear wheel after removing the cassette and disc and washed out the tubeless sealant...

See where the sealant has worked gumming up thorn holes...

Stripped out the old hub and binned the spoke nipples but boxed the spokes for another build of something in the future...

Everything needed  to rebuild the wheel, and sat listening to Radio 6 Music building the wheel on a Sunday morning was very relaxing...

Out to the man cave and i checked it was centred in the frame...

Then trued it near perfect in the wheel jig...

Fitted the 23 tooth sprocket-largest available to get the low gearing...

And the gear selector kit and disc mount...

Some regular pvc tape was fine for the spoke holes as wrapping 2 rolls of underlay foam to `Ghetto` split tubeless the tyre...

Quick way to inflate, no Stans juice to check its seated and tight enough...

Then add the sealant and inflate...

Found one of a pair of MKS track bike drop outs i have, ideal for keeping chain tension...

Fitted and the Alfine axle rotation spacer does not fit flush with the MKS tensioner...

So using some pliers to save the fingernails a quick grind on the buff and all is sweet...

Non drive side takes the chrome spacer from memory if using the white spacer on the drive side...

Split tube trimmed and rear wheel all done after deflating from 20 ps to 8 psi..

Now i never knew an easy way to connect and disconnect the gear select cable until i watched a video on YouTube on what lenght to set the cable end after i had to remove it to cut down the outer cable (127mm)
A 2mm allen key rotates the selector allowing you to disconnect it. All these years thinking it was a faff set up to remove the rear wheel and really it is simple when you do this...

Here is the video i watched and learned a simple trick..

Select 4th gear and aline the yellow lines on the selector and all is sweet....

Ready for the Surly stainless chain ring i bought used on eBay last Sunday and a new chain...

Midweek the chain and chain ring had arrived and i fitted it and the used Surly chain ring Thursday evening and now all running sweet...

I am waiting on a 1/8" half link to set the wheel up more forward as you can see it is not ideal for a new chain, riding the bike and initial chain stretch may allow after a link removed to ram the wheel fully forward...

Here is the Fatbob trailer wheel nuts fitted...

Tweaked for the offset...

Keep on truckin...

All sweet and ready to ride...

More soon...

  1. I wish I had known about the trick for fitting the gear cable when I had my folding bike with the hub gears. Neat bike.

  2. Is the bike noticeably heavier? Also, what tape do you use to for your tubeless setup?

  3. The bike is heavier at the back end but on an old Fatbike like the Pug i can live with that,
I have onl did Ghetto `split tube` tubeless so far using a 24" 2.5" tube, Vynil flooring foam underlay cut to pack the tyre if needed to make it seal with either co2 or track pump

  4. Hi, yes with those cranks i thought it better, usually i have a BB axle of 147.5mm, with the 149.5mm axle it seemed better, though it makes a BMX pitch chain nearly rub on the gear change cable holder on the hub,
